Quite often I get requests for information regarding food outlets, GoGo Bars, Coyote bars and such like. So, every now and then I will post some information about existing and new places – especially food outlets which seems to interest most people. It seems most people know there will be no shortage of alcohol around but they are more unsure or curious regarding ‘solids’!
I am not going to get involved in a rating system or even pretend to evaluate any of these places – merely give a subjective view on what they are, what they offer and how it measured up as far as I am concerned. Just MY opinion.
Last night I decided to get a take-away from The Jolly Friar which is a new Fish & Chips place recently opened in Soi Lengkee. Open from 12pm – 02am according to their flyer with free delivery within a 2-mile radius and a minimum order of 250Baht.
I ordered a large cod which proved to be all of the 400 gm they claimed; a smaller 250 gm portion which was also impressive and a medium portion of home-made chips; mushy peas; fish cakes. All of this came with vinegar, tartar sauce, lemon slices and lime wedge, ketchup and plastic cutlery.
While the cook was doing his thing I had a look around the place which has been nicely tiled about 1m up from the floor various blueish shades and painted white abouve that to the ceiling. There are 8 large mirrors on the walls giving the impression that the place is bigger than it actually is. The lighting with coloured shades are nice and there is a modest aircon taking the edge of the heat and humidity with a couple of fans which weren't needed when we went in.
A sample from their flyer:
Small Dory fillet 60 Baht; Cod Fillet 190 Baht; Fish Cake 45 Baht; ½ Roast Chicken 95 Baht; Steak / Kidney Pie 90 Baht; Small home-made Chips 40 Baht; Mushy Peas 35 Baht; Soft drinks 20 Baht.
The food arrived quiet quickly and the waitress was pleasant. I paid my bill and headed home to unpack the lot and get stuck in. Beware! The portions are big and I believe that for most a small fillet 250 gm and small chips would keep you happy for a fair while. The larger portions would definitely leave me bloated! Because I ordered larger and smaller portions as well as fish cakes and mushy peas my bill was fairly high for a ‘chippy’ but when you consider that two adults were more than satisfied, it was well worth the 520 Baht.
With the benefit of hindsight I could have just as easily ordered half and been filled. It would have been even cheaper if I had not opted for the really delicious cod. I got the impression that a sit-in meal would have been enjoyable also. Overall verdict: I have several flyers in the Metro bar and will definitely recommend it to customers looking for a good fish supper. If the current standards are maintained the this place will do well with many visitors to the area.
